Is this writing good enough to show off?

This borders on being a rant. If you want to publish articles, read some. Most are written in the 3rd person and site authorities, like institutes of cancer, or tobacco organizations. Site statistics. You have to research your subject and choose a particular topic. Narrow it down to one issue and focus on that. I'd grade this a D. You can do much better. Keep your opinion out of it. And don't preach to the reader by using "you". That's why this fails. Read, read, and read. That's the best teacher for learning English and writing it.
