Can a queen ant make her own colony alone?

I'd like to make an ant farm. A few weeks ago I went out into the garden and started digging but I was unable to locate the queen so I gave up, because I wanted a colony with a queen. And now I found a queen ant wandering in my bathroom, but she still has her wings. I don't know how they build their new colonies when they fly away from their original colony. Is she the right ant for me to start an ant farm? Or should I release her, because she can't do it alone?
